S. Carey – Watercress
S. Carey announces his new EP “Watercress,” arriving October 3rd via Jagjaguwar. The four-track collection follows 2022’s “Break Me Open” and finds the Bon Iver member moving toward brighter territory after previously exploring heartbreak and loss.
Recorded at Hive in Eau Claire, Wisconsin with Zach Hanson and Brian Joseph, the EP features guest vocals from Gia Margaret and Hannah Hebl. The title track introduces a “cool, clean strum” that signals a shift from his heavier previous work toward what one description calls “hard-won hope.”
Kyle Lehman directed the video for “Watercress,” shot in northwest Wisconsin where Carey makes his home. The imagery captures both macro and micro views of the woods and waters that inform his music. Carey connects the natural regeneration he observes to personal growth: “Just like a forest cut or burned, we all have the power to re-grow with the right care.”
The EP represents time spent healing, with Carey returning to clear, shallow waters where watercress grows. His music retains its characteristic wistful quality, but now carries what’s described as “the bright, crisp October morning kind of wistful.” After seasons of processing loss, “Watercress” finds him collecting and reassembling the pieces.
Carey tours extensively this fall, including UK and European dates, before joining John Raymond for the Shadowlands tour across the US.
